about
‘What You’re Feeling’ explores the breakdown of communication in a relationship where neither person feels heard or understood. It is at the same time an ode to Berlin, a city that has played an important part in Ross’ musical and artistic development.
The track began in Vancouver (2021), was then honed through live performances in London and Berlin, and finally finished in Lisbon, 2022. Accompanying the release of the single, is a music video shot with director João Marques.
João and Ross met in Berlin, Fall 2021, where Ross was living at the time. Here they filmed a music video for the track, wherein a lone alienated figure (Ross) roams the city - dealing with inner turmoil, distress and confusion. Exploring Super8 and Digital techniques, João created a hybrid mix of aesthetics that results in a powerful, experimental and evocative film, further amplified through its fragmented editing style.
Sonically, the track takes influence from Ross’ love for Berlin and the city’s darker, industrial tones. It incorporates percussive sounds recorded in Ross’ original Berlin studio from 2014, a dingy attic at the top floor of an old building in Mitte. Trashed snare drums struck with hammers, railings scraped with sticks, are some of the explosive colours found in a raw percussive backdrop. This is then filled out by a multitude of gritty analog synths, resting beneath a vulnerable vocal performance.
Sitting somewhere between Bowie and Moderat, this is a darker side to Ross’ sonic output, one that the listener can too find catharsis in.
lyrics
Taking over, around
And it's far from over now.
Hold me closer, that sound
Play it over and over now.
I feel what you're feeling
I know what you're seeing
I love you.
Feel me over, right now
Say it over and over again.
Hit me once more
But now, I find that it's over somehow.
Don't feel what you're seeing
Don't see what I'm feeling
I know this
I want this
Feel it
Now.
